On Friday, January 18 at 6:30PM, Writer’s Block Bookstore will host distinguished author and journalist Gilbert King at the bookstore for a Q&A and book signing. He will be speaking about his Pulitzer-Prize winning book, Devil in the Grove, and the results of the Groveland Four’s clemency hearing.
Devil in the Grove (Harper Collins, 2012) is the gripping true story of racism, murder, rape, and the law—a stirring account that brings to light one of the most dramatic court cases in American history—and offers a rare and revealing portrait of Thurgood Marshall that the world has never seen before. Drawing on a wealth of never-before-published material, including the FBI’s unredacted Groveland case files, as well as unprecedented access to the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund files, Devil in the Grove shines new light on this remarkable civil rights crusader and a piece of Florida history.
His newest book Beneath A Ruthless Sun (Riverhead, 2018) tells a powerful, page-turning story rooted in the fears that rippled through the South as integration began to take hold, sparking a surge of virulent racism that savaged the vulnerable, debased the powerful, and roils our own times still.
